Mobile Food Giveaways provide food to “food deserts” where accessibility is limited or scarce. Fresh, healthy food tends to have a short shelf life.
Pantry Plus More partners with the Mountaineer Food Bank which transports and distributes food to multiple areas throughout West Virginia. Mobile Food Giveaways provide a variety of items. Past events have distributed items such as the following:
- Fresh produce items, such as fruits and vegetables
- Meat
- Dairy products
- Bread
- Baked goods
- Non-perishable pantry items, such as granola bars, drinks, and soups
- Other necessities such as clothes, soap, deodorant, baby essentials, and adult diapers
Approximately 350 people attend each Mobile Food Giveaway, which supplies necessities for 1000 – 1,500 family members.
Thanks to our collaboration with Mountaineer Food Bank, Monongalia County residents have access to 12 – 15,000 lbs of fresh produce, frozen meat, and grains. This partnership directly helps families, seniors, and individuals. With 1 out of every 5 West Virginians experiencing food insecurity, we could not accomplish climbing this huge mountain of need without their help.
The Mobile Food Giveaways also provide an opportunity for the community to contribute. In the summer, many residents donate overflow produce from their personal gardens, making these events truly an amazing community effort. In addition, volunteers from all areas of the community — WVU professors and students, high school groups, middle school students, and community members — join together to help set up, distribute food, and assist at the event.
