Mobile Food Giveaways provide food to “food deserts” where accessibility is limited or scarce. Fresh, healthy food tends to have a short shelf life.
To make sure food gets to our clients as quickly and fresh as possible, we have partnered with Mountaineer Food Bank, which transports the food to select locations and distributes it. Mobile Food Giveaways provide a variety of items, and attendees can choose from the following list:
- 3-4 fresh produce items, such as fruits and vegetables
- A meat choice
- Dairy products
- Baked goods
- Two non-perishable pantry items, such as granola bars, drinks, and soups
- Other necessities like clothes, soap, deodorant, baby essentials, and adult diapers
Approximately 250 people attend each Mobile Food Giveaway, which supplies necessities for 800 – 1,000 households.
Thanks to our collaboration with Mountaineer Food Bank, Monongalia County residents have access to 12 – 15,000 lbs of fresh produce, frozen meat, and grains once a month. This partnership allows a large distribution each month to help families, seniors, and individuals. With 1 out of every 5 West Virginians experiencing food insecurity, we could not accomplish climbing this huge mountain of need without their help.
The Mobile Food Giveaways also provide an opportunity for the community to contribute. Many residents donate overflow produce from their personal gardens, making these events truly an amazing community effort. In addition, between 60 to 168 volunteers from all areas of the community — WVU professors and students, high school groups, middle school students, and community members — join together to unload, bag produce, and carry food
